Tours & Activities

Tiwai Island has a range of activities to enjoy during your time on the Island:

Forest Walks
Join the forest guides, weave through the multiple trails of the Tiwai forest, and explore up to 50 kilometres of walking paths. Listen to the sounds of hornbills flying overhead and monkeys calling from the canopies.
River Tours
Options to go up river to find heritage sites and beaches, or down river to experience rapids and view waterfalls, both in search for river turtles, and in other animals. Join a night tour to search for the elusive and extremely rare pygmy hippopotamus.
Beaches
At the tip of Tiwai’s northern edge stretches two sandy beaches. Enjoy a cooling swim in the fresh water, but look out for river otter paw prints, as they like to play on the sand! This is only available during the dry season (December to March).
Animal Trekking
Want to see a specific bird, monkey species or chimpanzee? Ask a staff member to organize a trek with an experienced forest guide.
Cultural Dance
Join members from each of the surrounding eight communities to learn about their cultural dance style and hear stories from their lives. Visitors will have the change to join in and show off their dance moves!
Relax
Take time to unwind and de-stress – and read a book surrounded by the sound of nature from the heart of the island.
