The rare and colorful Diana monkey

Tiwai has one of the highest concentration and diversity of primates in the world … 11 species. Some of them are rare and endangered species like the colobus monkeys (black & white, red and olive) and the Diana monkey.

Tiwai is also host to wild chimpanzees, who use stones as hammers and tree roots as anvils to crack open hard nuts.

The rare and endemic pygmy hippopotamus is a solitary animal, eating the swampy vegetation on land & in the river. It is only find in the Gola rainforest in Sierra Leone and in parts of Liberia.

Over 135 different bird species, including 8 types of hornbills and the white breasted Guinea fowl, can be found on Tiwai.
